Statins are relatively cheap and safe and are among the most widely used medicines in the world.

If you are suffering from high cholesterol and got sick and tired of taking your regular cholesterol lowering statin drugs such as Zocor and Lipitor here is a good reason why you should not stop.

It was found that people who were taking statins were twice as likely to survive than those who were not on such medicine when they caught seasonal flu or H1N1 infections.

Statins do not cure flu or H1N1 virus but they somehow managed to improve the survival rate from these infectious diseases.

Statins not only lower cholesterol. They are also well known to reduce inflammation. Much of the damages cause by the flu or H1N1 viruses were due to the inflammation which resulted from the body’s immune response to fight the virus. As such the statins somehow protect the body from such damages caused by inflammation.

In fact the US Food and Drug Administration has authorized the emergency use of the experimental drug peramivir as a H1N1 flu treatment recently in the light of these recent research findings.

Hopefully this piece of good news from the collateral benefits of taking statins can encourage you to continue taking your drug to keep your cholesterol level down.
